The wealth of varied habitats throughout the sub-continent and Sri Lanka gives rise to an overwhelming abundance of species.

In the north during spring the Rhododendron and Magnolia  forests are awash with red, white and pink blossoms and Daphne perfume the air.  Later in the year, during the rainy season, alpine slopes and meadows are in full bloom with  Meconopsis, Corydalis, Saxifrage, Lily, Geranium and Campanula.

In the Himalayan foothills around Kalimpong and Darjeeling there are tea gardens to explore, the Lloyd Botanical Garden with a beautiful orchid house and plant nurseries growing orchids, succulents and gladioli for the cut flower market.

In the Western Ghats of Kerala and Tamil Nadu you can see sub-tropical forest flora of all types especially orchids, also spice growing, such as pepper, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon as well as tea and coffee.
